Whether you need to protect your home or business from the harsh California sun or prevent damage from graffiti or vandalism, we have the right solution. When they say their goal is to “exceed your expectations” they mean it. From the first contact to the last I was impressed with their professionalism. They were knowledgeable, offered suggestions, took their time, and came up with a plan which they then executed promptly. I only wish all of the companies and contractors with which I have interacted could be as reliable as Window Tint LA.

Eye-catching privacy film

As noted in the section above, different types of window film absorb varying degrees of heat, which some windows are equipped to handle and others… not so much. Most security and decorative films block minimal heat and therefore don’t place much thermal stress on the windows. At Tint World®, we adhere to a national standard of window film and coating excellence, so we only employ the most experienced and professional window film installers and nano ceramic coating applicators.

Liven up your space with custom graphics

Protect your belongs from permanent sun damage and fading by reducing 99% of the sun’s invisible UVA and UVB rays. Applying tint to the windows in your home is 91% less expensive than replacing the windows. Reject over 99% of UV rays which extends the life of artwork, rugs, drapery, and furniture. Helps protect your skin from damaging UV rays while indoors. We break down our estimates by each piece of glass and give you one “Exact Price” quote, based on the square footage. You can trust the competitive price we give you, and our quote won’t change.

Professional Home Window Tinting

After the film has been applied, it must cure for several hours (or even days), depending on the type of film and the environment it was installed in. A professional window tinting job can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on your project’s size. Older windows without low-emissivity (low-E) coatings (a thin layer of metal oxide on the glass) that block out heat stand to gain the most from the energy savings afforded by tinting. Newer windows with low-E coatings already provide homes with a measure of energy efficiency, so your indoor comfort and energy savings may not significantly increase by applying window film to these windows.

Surprise would-be intruders with an added layer of security. Improve eye comfort by reducing harsh light glare from reflective surfaces and the sun itself. Whether it’s a 20 year old window, a new office building, one door, or a three-million-dollar yacht, we bring prompt and professional service to every job. What a professional team of people, from the sales staff to the installers.

Scope of Project

Be sure to ask about labor costs when getting a free quote from local window tinting companies. There are many different shades of window film to choose from that will dictate the performance of the film. All window film manufacturers make products that work the same but have different hues of color. You first need to decide if you are looking for a solar film or a decorative film.

How Much Does Window Cleaning Cost?

You can get daytime privacy with window film but the current products that are available do not allow for night time privacy if the lights are on. You can use a decorative film such as a frosted to achieve night time privacy, however, you will not be able to see in or out of that window during the day or night. These include privacy, protection from UV rays that can damage electronics and furniture, glare reduction, and energy savings. During the day, tinted windows make it impossible to see inside the house. At night there is no tint film that can prevent inside light from shining outside, so shades or blinds are required at dark for full privacy. Public tours of the White House are set to resume Friday : NPR

east wing of white house

In December of 1869, Congress appointed a commission to select a site and prepare plans and cost estimates for a new State Department Building. The commission was also to consider possible arrangements for the War and Navy Departments. Beautiful landscaping has graced the White House grounds since the administration of Thomas Jefferson. The South Lawn features over three dozen commemorative trees that date back to the 1870s. During the Kennedy administration, Rachel Lambert “Bunny” Mellon redesigned the White House gardens, including the famed Rose Garden outside the West Wing.

President Joe Biden

Jefferson’s response to Latrobe’s critique contains the first mention of a wing extension. Jefferson wanted an immediate extension for a coach house 60 feet long with a north doorway for horses. A surviving drawing helps establish the size of the initial west wing (illustration 9).

History

The use of public transportation is highly recommended on your tour day by the White House. On-street parking can be VERY hard to find, so plan on using an app like SpotHero to find a space in a garage within your budget (read our full guide to parking in DC). There is no specific dress code to tour the White House, but most try to dress business casual or holiday appropriate if you are there during Christmas in D.C.. You will see people in their office outfits, as well as families dressed up for the holidays to take photos. You can count on spending at least 45 minutes to an hour touring the White House.

Architecture: 1900s-1940s

The 1918 Woodrow Wilson state service was the first White House service made in the United States. While it was only a project on the drafting table, the design of the EEOB was subject to controversy. When it was completed in 1888, the Second Empire style had fallen from favor, and Mullett’s masterpiece was perceived by capricious Victorians as only an embarrassing reminder of past whims in architectural preference. This was especially the case with the EEOB, since previous plans for a building on the same site had been in the Greek Revival style of the Treasury Building. When the EEOB was finished in 1888, it was the largest office building in Washington, with nearly 2 miles of black and white tiled corridors.

east wing of white house

On the west the subterranean ice house became re-enclosed in brick as part of the west wing in 1805. While it offers a distant comparative view in time, we know that President James Madison was determined to rebuild the house and wings as they were before the fire, a symbolic gesture that also implied the already iconic nature of the house. Hoban left a pretty good description of the extent of the main house’s standing walls but not of the wings. The wing’s masonry walls, partially in-ground, might have withstood substantial destruction just like those of the basement.

The vice president has an office in the West Wing, as well as the ceremonial office in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. When President Harry S. Truman moved into the White House in 1945, he became concerned about the state of the building. In 1947, a chandelier in the Blue Room almost fell on Bess Truman and her guests from the Daughters of the American Revolution, and in 1948, the leg of Margaret Truman’s piano pierced through the floor of what is now the private dining room. Engineers confirmed that the building was at risk of collapse, and Truman and his family relocated to Blair House, the president’s guesthouse located nearby at 1651 Pennsylvania Ave. Consistent with prior practices, public White House tour requests must be submitted a minimum of 21 days in advance and no more than 90 days in advance of the requested tour date(s).

If the White House is, as the historian William Seale has written, “an American Idea,”1 it includes one of Jefferson’s most tenacious architectural ideas— domestic service wings. Jefferson did not invent the concept but borrowed it from those seen attached to Renaissance villas in Andrea Palladio’s Four Books of Architecture (1570). Domestic service wings appear in Jefferson’s earliest drawings for his bookish Palladian- style home, Monticello, built in the early 1770s.

James Hoban: Architect of the White House

east wing of white house

When she became first lady in 1889, Caroline Harrison continued to pursue the Victorian art form of china painting. This hobby and her interest in history (she was the first president of the Daughters of the American Revolution) led her to take an active interest in collecting and preserving White House tableware used in previous administrations. Although she planned to have a cabinet built in the State Dining Room to display examples of White House china services, her idea was not executed before her premature death in 1892, while her husband was running unsuccessfully for re-election. The walls shown on the 1853 Walter plan seem to confirm the room divisions and an open carriage end similar to one on the east. Latrobe’s reference to cellars for “coal or dung,” mentioned in relationship to rooms 10 feet wide, seems to confirm a combined cellar space for the coal cellar and privy waste removal. This combination works only for the west wing, but it does not resolve the question of access.

First Floor

They also added a few modern amenities, such as a wine cellar, a laundry room, a movie theater with seating for up to six guests, and new staff quarters. The East Sitting Hall is located on the second floor of the White House, home of the president of the United States. First used as a reception room for guests of the president (the Lincoln Bedroom and the Queens' Bedroom were originally offices of the chief executive), it is now a family parlor with access to the east rooms on the second floor. The building’s South and North Porticoes were added in 1824 and 1829, respectively, while John Quincy Adams established the residence’s first flower garden. Ground Floor CorridorUntil 1902, the Ground Floor in the White House served as utilitarian space used by servants. As a result, by the end of the 19th century, James Hoban’s original groin vaulting in the wide corridor of this floor had been cut through in numerous places to accommodate pipes and ducts.

Presidents used the complex for secure videoconferences before such tech became more portable. The hush-hush complex was created in 1961 by the Kennedy administration after the Bay of Pigs invasion. President Kennedy believed there should be a dedicated crisis management center where officials could coordinate intelligence faster and better. Where President Obama and his team watched the raid that took down al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in 2011. Where President Trump monitored the 2019 operation that killed Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. These are rooms where history happens, where the president meets with national security officials to discuss secret operations and sensitive government matters, speaks with foreign leaders and works through major national security crises.

Next door to the White House, the Eisenhower Executive Office Building (EEOB) commands a unique position in both our national history and architectural heritage. Designed by Supervising Architect of the Treasury, Alfred B. Mullett, it was built from 1871 to 1888 to house the growing staffs of the State, War, and Navy Departments, and is considered one of the best examples of French Second Empire architecture in the country. In bold contrast to many of the somber classical revival buildings in Washington, the EEOB’s flamboyant style epitomizes the optimism and exuberance of the post–Civil War period. During the 1840s the west wing laundry room that had moved out of the basement caught fire. Fire was still a danger from the kitchen that never left the basement space.

Made of wood from the HMS Resolute, the desk is currently in use by President Biden. Construction began in October of 1792 with the laying of the first cornerstone. The building was constructed between 1792 and 1800 using Aquia sandstone from the Government Island quarry (also a supplier of stone for the exterior of the US Capitol), bricks made in kilns near the site, and lumber from forests in Maryland and Virginia. The four-story structure originally resembled more of a ski chalet, but later caught fire and lost two of its floors. Today, the 11-bedroom residence is being offered up by Mehrdad Elie and his wife, Neda Elie.

Notable interiors include an ornate cast-iron library, the Secretary’s suite, and the stained glass skylight over the west wing’s double staircase. At the request of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Lorenzo Winslow, a government architect assigned to the White House, prepared designs and supervised construction in 1942 of a new east wing. Jefferson and Latrobes original east wing was torn down in 1866 because of its poor condition. In 1902 McKim constructed a new glass-enclosed wing on its foundations and created an entrance for social functions with a port cochere for guests and carriages. The new east wing contained a formal entrance for guests, offices on the first and second floors, and an air raid shelter underground.

To the left of the mason is a lower brick wall that seems to be directly under the third window bay, with an arch springing from it. Mrs. Woodrow Wilson added guestrooms and a painting studio for herself in 1913 in this space. A full third floor was not created until the Coolidge Administration, when problems with the roof structure were discovered. Recommendations were made to replace the old roof and 1817 timber structure.

At First Lady Edith Roosevelt’s initiative, two cabinets were purchased for the corridor in 1904 to display pieces of dinner and dessert services used by former presidents. Mrs. Roosevelt also decided to hang portraits of first ladies in this space, inaugurating a tradition that has been retained to the present. The East Wing also includes the Garden Room, Family Theater, Visitors Foyer, and the East Colonnade corridor. Visitors touring the White House enter through the east entrance and follow the East Colonnade past the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden to enter the Residence to see rooms on the Ground and State Floors. Thomas Jefferson used part of this room as his office where he and his secretary, Meriwether Lewis, planned the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1802.

The second bay shows the sill of a doorway accessing the wood room that was later filled with brick. The third bay is shown as a doorway that would have accessed the necessary. The evidence would seem to confirm the Walter plan’s depiction showing a window in bay two. Jefferson’s first addition was neither in the house nor in the wings but an exterior ice house constructed just west of the house in 1801. Some functions might wait, but those related to the quality of food and drink could not!

Granderson: Arizona’s indictment of Trump allies follows a sordid, racist history

On the north side (left side of photograph) the ice house wall “ghost” is visible to the right, and continuing below window bay two. This defines the wall between the ice house and the wood room, whose walls are shown on the Walter plan as recessed for the original window and door to open into the room. On the wall to the right of window bay three (upper left foreground), and below to the right of the mason, is evidence of the missing wall between the wood room and the privy. This same wall also appears on the right side of the photograph in the foreground just below and east of the doorway (due to the perspective of the photograph things do not seem to align if the opening bays are not used as reference). This wall also establishes the eastern wall of room three, the necessary, whose full extent can- not be seen in the photograph. These walls for the original rooms two and three prove that the larger room shown in the Walter plan was created out of two earlier rooms.

How long does a White House tour last?

Counting the Oval Office and the Rose Garden among its famous features, it remains the only private residence of a head of state open free of charge to the public. The first small East Wing was built in 1902, during the Theodore Roosevelt renovations as an entrance for formal and public visitors. This served mainly as an entrance for guests during large social gatherings, when it was necessary to accommodate many cars and carriages—as well as many cloaks and hats. It's primary feature was the long cloak room with spots for coats and hats of the ladies and gentlemen. Not every president has ordered state china, so both official and some family services are exhibited.

White House tours are back!

President Jefferson added colonnaded terraces to the east and west sides of the White House, but no actual wings. Under Jackson in 1834, running water was piped in from a spring and pumped up into the east terrace in metal tubes. These ran through the walls and protruded into the rooms, controlled by spigots. Initially, the water was for washing items, but soon the first bathing rooms were created, in the ground-level east colonnade. For many years, a greenhouse occupied the east grounds of the White House.

More From the Los Angeles Times

In July of 1792, Irish-born architect James Hoban’s submission was selected by Washington, and he was hired to build the White House. Visitors touring the White House enter through the east entrance and followthe East Colonnade past the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden to enter theResidence to see rooms on the Ground and State Floors. If you are a citizen of a foreign country, please contact your embassy in Washington, D.C. In Washington, DC, the mansion has been home to every US president since John Adams in 1800. Over in California, there is a replica of the famed building, known as the Western White House, which is The National's International Property of the Week. At 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the White House has one of the most famous addresses in the world.

Hoban returned to rebuild the residence, and while work was completed in 1817, he continued to work on additions for several more years. In 1824, he added the South Portico for James Monroe, and he constructed the North Portico for Andrew Jackson from 1829 to 1830. Set on 18 acres of land, the White House is made up of the Executive Residence, the East Wing, and the West Wing, with its famous Oval Office. Today, the residence includes six levels with 132 rooms, including 16 family and guest rooms and 35 bathrooms, and is spread over 55,000 square feet.

Today’s structure was built in 1942 and sits atop the Presidential Emergency Operations Center. The two-story East Wing houses the office spaces of the first lady and her staff. The central Executive Residence is home to the president’s living spaces and the State Rooms.

The photograph clearly shows a round brick out- line of the ice house, the wing room most substantiated. By using the window and door bays as markers, it is possible to place the “ghosts” on the upper walls and the below-grade remains in a proper context despite the photograph’s warped perspective. On the right, the south wall, can be seen the first lunette window bay adjacent to the ice house, with a later doorway below it. To the right of that bay is the “ghost” of a missing wall that separated the ice house from room two.

Door and window openings were centered between each Tuscan column on the south (the columns did not come until 1808) and between the evenly spaced lunette windows on the north. That this design trumped internal room division walls is at the heart of the matter for understanding changes. Latrobe’s mention of rooms 10 feet wide does not match the sur- viving Jefferson plan and indicates either some missing updated drawings by Jefferson or some tweaking by Latrobe. Because the ice house is off-center to the north in the wing, there is room on its south side under the arch for space containing a stairway to be squeezed between the curved ice house wall and the south exterior wall. Completed in 1875, the State Department’s south wing was the first to be occupied, with its elegant four-story library (completed in 1876), Diplomatic Reception Room, and Secretary’s office decorated with carved wood, Oriental rugs, and stenciled wall patterns. The Navy Department moved into the east wing in 1879, where elaborate wall and ceiling stenciling and marquetry floors decorated the office of the Secretary.

Located at the country’s most well-known address, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave in Washington, DC, the White House is America’s most iconic home. The official residence and office of the president of the United States, the White House has been the home of every president since John Adams and the site of some of the most important events in American history. Use of public transportation is strongly encouraged, as there is no parking available on the White House complex and street parking is limited.

Later, it was used as an office, waiting room, conference room, and billiard room. The French Second Empire style originated in Europe, where it first appeared during the rebuilding of Paris in the 1850s and 60s. Based upon French Renaissance prototypes, such as the Louvre Palace, the Second Empire style is characterized by the use of a steep mansard roof, central and end pavilions, and an elaborately sculptured facade. Its sophistication appealed to visiting foreigners, especially in England and America, where as early as the late 1850s, architects began adopting isolated features and, eventually, the style as a coherent whole.

Especially if you can get on a White House Christmas tour, but we enjoy wandering the President and First Lady’s house throughout the year. The complex is staffed around the clock by military and civilian personnel who monitor breaking developments worldwide. The White House opened the classified space to a group of reporters this week for a rare visit to check out the new look. President Biden got a tour on Tuesday and then received an intelligence briefing in the space, said Marc Gustafson, the Situation Room director. While the garden was established in 1913, it was President John F. Kennedy and first lady Jacqueline Kennedy who in 1961 decided to breathe new life into the space.

Architect Eric Gugler more than doubled the space of what was becoming known as the “West Wing,” added a swimming pool in the west terrace for the polio-stricken president, and moved the Oval Office to the southeast corner. A new east wing was constructed in 1942, its cloakroom transformed into a movie theater. The first executive offices were constructed on sites flanking the White House between 1799 and 1820. A series of fires (including those set by the British during the War of 1812) and overcrowded conditions led to the construction of the existing Treasury Building. In 1866, the construction of the North Wing of the Treasury Building necessitated the demolition of the State Department building to the northeast of the White House.
